Efficient Turning of Low‑Carbon Steel Parts for Automotive Industry

Laatste bedrijfscasus over Efficient Turning of Low‑Carbon Steel Parts for Automotive Industry

Application Background

Low‑carbon steel (carbon content generally below 0.25%) features excellent plasticity, toughness and weldability. It is widely adopted in automotive, construction, engineering machinery and other industries. Nevertheless, its high plasticity and toughness bring distinctive challenges during turning:

🔶 Poor chip breaking & chip entanglement: Low‑carbon steel exhibits high toughness, so chips are hard to break. Long curled chips tend to wrap around workpieces and cutting tools, disrupting normal machining.
🔶 Built‑up edge (BUE) formation: Under high pressure and high temperature, workpiece material cold‑welds onto the cutting edge, forming hard built‑up edge. It alters tool geometry and severely impairs surface finish and dimensional accuracy.
🔶 Poor machined surface quality: Apart from built‑up edge, chip entanglement and material adhesion under low‑speed or improper cutting conditions result in rough workpiece surfaces, making ideal surface quality difficult to achieve.

Solution Analysis
🟠 For this high‑volume production scenario, the customer needed higher tool stability and elimination of chip entanglement. Without changing depth of cut and feed rate, Worldia solution raised cutting speed from 300 m/min to 370 m/min, achieving 23.3% higher machining efficiency and 53% longer tool life.

🟠 Worldia adopts WHP20HA cermet coated inserts. Compared with cemented carbide, cermet delivers higher hardness, superior wear resistance and outstanding chemical stability, with low affinity to steel materials. It effectively restrains built‑up edge formation and suits high‑speed semi‑finishing & finishing turning of low‑carbon steel. Combined with FF positive‑rake finishing chip‑breaker, it controls chip flow, solves chip entanglement and guarantees surface quality. Wear inspection shows both rake‑face and flank‑face wear are significantly better than the original tool, validating the reliability of this replacement solution.

🟠 Tailored for actual machining conditions and customer requirements, Worldia selects optimized insert grade and chip‑breaker geometry to resolve chip entanglement, improve machining stability and extend tool life. It helps mass‑production customers lower manufacturing cost, shorten cycle time and boost overall productivity.
